Simple Interrogative - La forme interrogative simple
The simple interrogative is formed by......
(interrogative) Est-ce que tu achètes des fruits?
Le professeur sait-il que tu es malade? Does the teacher know that you are ill?
- Using "est-ce que" before an affirmative sentence
(interrogative) Est-ce que tu achètes des fruits?
- Inverting the subject and the verb, separate with a hyphen, and add question mark.
- When there is a subject noun, the noun is placed before the inverted question.

- When a verb in the present tense ends in a vowel, and is followed by il or elle, a t is added between the verb and the pronoun:
Arrive-t-il avant ses amis? Does he arrive before his friends?
NOTE: Except for the verbs avoir, être, and pouvoir, the inverted form cannot be used for the first person singular. In general, it is better to use the long form with est-ce que for the first person singular of all verbs.

In the formation of the negative interrogative form.........
- ne is placed before the inverted question and the pas is placed after.

Ex. Ne parlez-vous pas avec elle? Aren't you speaking with her?
For the long form, est-ce que is placed before the negative sentence. Ex. Est-ce que vous ne parlez pas avec elle? NOTE: For an affirmative answer to a negative interrogative question, si is used instead of oui. Ex. Ne parlez-vouz pas avec elle? Si, presque tous les jours! Yes, almost every day. |
