DIRECT OBJECT PRONOUNS - le, la, les

- Used to replace the direct object (D.O) of a verb
- How do you find the direct object in a sentence? Ask WHO or WHAT after the verb?
Ex. He sees Marie. Who does he see? = Marie = D.O
- DOPs can replace people or things and are used so you don't keep repeating the person or thing.
I ate the apple. It was good.
***The DOP is always placed IN FRONT of the VERB for which it is the object***
Ex. Elle mange la pomme. (D.O = la pomme)
Elle la mange. (DOP = la)
THE NEGATIVE: Subject + NE + DOP + Verb + PAS
TEMPS COMPOSÉ:
NOTE: For verb tenses that have a helper (ex. Passé Composé), the DOP goes IN FRONT of the HELPER.
Ex. Elle a vu Luc.
Elle l'a vu. (l' replaced Luc)
What if?
Ex. Elle a vu Marie.
Elle l'a vue. (l' = Marie and is in front of verb, therefore AGREEMENT of the PAST PARTICIPLE)
THE NEGATIVE: NE + DOP + Conjugated Verb + PAS + AGREEMENT OF PAST PARTICIPLE
Ex. Elle ne la mange pas.
Elle ne l'a pas mangée. (la pomme)
NOTE: If you have an INFINITIVE, the DOP will go IN FRONT of the INFINITIVE.
Ex. Je vais manger la pomme.
Je vais la manger.
THE NEGATIVE: Subject + NE + Verb + PAS + DOP + Infinitive.
*The negative goes around the conjugated verb.
Ex. Je ne vais pas la manger.
DOPs with the IMPERATIVE
- Place a hypen after the verb and add the DOP except for me and te, change to moi and toi.
Take you (informal) = Prends-toi!
- The DOP with go AFTER the VERB.
Look at me. = Regarde-moi.
Take it (informal) = Prends-le!
Keep it (formal) = Gardez-le!
THE NEGATIVE: NE + DOP + Verb + PAS
Ex. Ne le regarde pas! Ne le regardez pas! Ne le prends pas!
Ne me regarde pas!
Le, la les may stand for:

USES:
1) After a preposition to replace the name of a person or an animal only: devant, derrière, avec, pour, chez, etc. Ex. J'habite avec eux. I live with them. 2) After certain verbs that are followed by à plus the name of a person. NOTE: The following verbs, the inDOP cannot be used. penser à = to think about, of s'intéresser à = to be interested in s'adresser à = to approach someone s'habituer à = to be used to tenir à = to hold dear, value se fier à = to trust rêver à = to dream about songer à = to think of être à = to belong to venir à = to come to Ex. Ce livre est à moi. This book belongs to me. Je m'intéresse à lui. I am interested in him. Elle pense à eux. She thinks about (of) them. Elle s'est habituée à lui. She got used to him. TIP: When these verbs are used with a thing, the pronoun y is used instead. Ex. Je m'habitue à ma nouvelle maison. Je m'y habitue. Elle a pensé à ses vacances. Elle y a pensé. 3) When there are many subjects 4) When there is a comparison Ex. Mon frère est plus grand que moi. My brother is taller than I am. 5) After c'est or just as an elliptical answer. Ex. C'est lui qui a ouvert la fenêtre. It is he who opened the window. Ex. Qui a vu ce film? Moi. Who saw this movie? Me (or I did). 6) Before même, meaning self (myself, yourself..) Ex. Je veux le faire moi-même. I want to do it myself. 7) With ni.....ni Ex. Ni elle ni moi n'avons vu ce film. Neither she nor I saw this movie. 8) Before aussi and non plus Ex. Moi aussi. Moi non plus. Me too. Me neither. |
Indirect Object Pronouns
- Verbs followed by à require an indirect object pronoun. These verbs are not necessarily followed by to in English.
SENTENCES WITH BOTH A DIRECT AND AN INDIRECT OBJECT PRONOUN:
- If both pronouns begin with the letter l (le, la, les and lui, leur), their position in the sentence is alphabetical (le, la, and les comes before lui or leur).
Je raconte les histoires aux enfants. Je les leur raconte.
- If one pronoun begins with m, t, n, or v (me, te, nous, vous) and the other begins with l (le, la, and les), the pronoun beginning with l is closest to the verb.
Il me raconte les histoires. Il me les raconte.
inDOP's with the IMPERATIVE
Ex. Donne-le-lui. Give it to him
Vas-y. Go ahead.
Raconte-la-leur. Tell it to them.
Allons-y. Let's go.
Dis-le-moi. Tell it to me.
- In the NEGATIVE, the order changes to Subject + ne + DOP + inDOP + verb + pas
Ex. Ne le lui donne pas. Don't give it to him.
Ne lui en parle pas. Don't speak of it to him.
Ne me le dis pas. Don't tell it to me.
N'y allez pas. Don't go there.
NOTE: In the negative imperative, moi becomes me.

NOTE: Do Not mistake the reflexive pronouns for the object pronouns. The reflexive pronouns are me, m', te, t', se, s', nous, vous, se, s'. They are used with reflexive verbs only.

Y1) Replaces names of places and locations that are preceded by: à, dans, en, sur, sous, au-dessous, au-dessus, etc.

The demonstrative pronouns refer to persons or things and agree in gender and number with the nouns they stand for. They are never used alone but are followed by:
1) a relative clause:
eg. Quelle robe voulez-vous?..........Celle qui est dans la vitrine.
2) de + noun:
eg. Derrière la maison, il y a ma voiture et celle de mon père.
3) -ci or -la (this one/that one):
eg. Tu vois ces maisons: J'habite celle-ci et Elizabeth celle-la.

RELATIVE PRONOUN - dont
Dont (whose/of which), like qui, que, and ou, is a relative pronoun. It stand for the preposition de + noun and is used in a relative clause which contains a construction with de. This occurs is three cases.
1) The verb in the relative clause requires the preposition de.
2) Dont replaces de + noun when de links that noun to another noun to indicate possession or connection.
3) Dont also replaces de + noun when de links that noun to an adjective.
