**COURSE OVERVIEW**

*Please Note: This course requires the completion of a Provincially Certified Final Exam worth 20% of the final course mark!*

**Unit 1 – Number:**

o Chapter 1 (Unit Pricing and Currency Exchange)

o Chapter 2 (Earning an Income)

__Prescribed Learning Outcomes:__

*Solve problems that involve unit pricing and currency exchange, using proportional reasoning.

*Demonstrate an understanding of income, including:

• wages

• salary

• contracts

• commissions

• piecework

to calculate gross pay and net pay.

**Unit 2 – Measurement:**

o Chapter 3 (Length, Area, and Volume)

o Chapter 4 (Mass, Temperature, and Volume)

__Prescribed Learning Outcomes:__

*Demonstrate an understanding of the Système International (SI) by:

• describing the relationships of the units for length area, volume, capacity, mass and temperature applying strategies to convert SI units to imperial

units.

*Demonstrate an understanding of the imperial system by:

• describing the relationships of the units for length,

• comparing the American and British imperial units for capacity

• applying strategies units.

*Solve and verify problems that involve SI and imperial linear measurements, including decimal and fractional measurements.

*Solve problems that involve SI and imperial area measurements of regular, composite and irregular 2-D shapes and 3-D objects, including decimal and fractional measurements, and verify the solutions.

**Unit 3 – Geometry**

o Chapter 5 (Angles and Parallel Lines)

o Chapter 6 (Similarity of Figures)

o Chapter 7 (Trigonometry of Right Triangles)

__Prescribed Learning Outcomes:__

*Demonstrate an understanding of primary trigonometric ratios (sine, cosine, tangent) by:

• applying similarity to right triangles

• generalizing patterns from similar right triangles

• applying the primary trigonometric ratios

• solving problems.

*Solve problems that involve parallel, perpendicular and transversal lines, and pairs of angles formed between them.

*Demonstrate an understanding of angles, including acute, right, obtuse, straight and reflex, by:

• drawing

• replicating and constructing

• bisecting

• solving problems.

**Expectations:**

**1**) Students arrive on time and come prepared to each class with textbook, pencils, paper, and calculator.

2) Students abide by the NO CELL PHONE school policy and leave these at home, in their locker, or in the classroom holding box. If a student is caught with a cell phone the first offense is to have it taken away for the remainder of the class. Second offense the cell phone will be given to administration for the remainder of the day. Third offense the cell phone must be picked up by a parent/guardian.

3) Students are expected to complete homework daily. Students should be spending at least 1-hour daily reviewing assignments in order to be successful in the course.
