Conditionnel Passé
Emploi: When a "si" (if) clause is used in the pluperfect (plus-que-parfait), the result clause will be in the past conditional (conditionnel passé).
Exemple: (A) Nous aurions acheté la maison si nous avions eu de l'argent. We would have bought the house if we had had money. (B) Si j'avais acheté la voiture, je serais allé vous voir. If I had bought the car, I would have gone to see you. Traduction: J'aurais joué. I would have played. Je serais allé. I would have gone. Other Uses:
1) Used after the conjunction que when the principal verb is in the past.
Ex. Je pensais que tu aurais aimé ce film. I thought that you would have liked this movie.
2) Used to report a rumour, a fact that has yet to be confirmed.
Ex. Mme.Dallas est en retard; elle aurait eu des problèmes avec sa voiture. Mme.Dallas is late; she could have had car problems.
3) Used when a wish did not come true.
Ex. Elle aurait voulu nous accompagner; mais son marie était malade. She would have liked to accompany us, but her husband was ill.
